Smithson (from The Land Artist Series)

$4.00 pattern pdf to be mailed within 1-3 days of payment clearing.

Smithson is a reversible spiral hat pattern that can be knit from the top down or the bottom up. Your pick!

The hat is named for Robert Smithson, creator of Spiral Jetty (1960), a massive coil of mud, salt crystals and rock snaking out 1,500 feet from Rozel Point into the Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA. The series was inspired by "land" or "earthworks" artists who used the spiral form in their work.

Smithson is also on Ravelry.

Finished Size
Fits up to 23" / 58.5 cm head circumference; 19" / 48.25 cm unblocked.

Yarn
Depending on the weight, enough to make a hat. If you've knit hats before, you should have a guesstimate of how much yarn of a specific weight is needed. Sample used 1 ball Phildar Castel (65% Acrylic, 25% Wool, 10% Chlorofiber; 1¾ oz / 50 g; 144 yd / 132 m) in Z105 Loden. A solid or semi-solid yarn is recommended.

Needles
Dpns appropriate for your selected yarn and dpns 1 size smaller for knitting the brim. Sample used US6 / 4mm and US5 / 3.75 mm dpns. Adjust needle size to obtain correct gauge.

Notions
Waste yarn of similar weight (if knitting top down), 10 stitch markers (optional), tapestry needle.

Gauge
14 (16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28) sts per 4" / 10 cm in Stockinette stitch on larger needles. To save time and ensure accurate sizing, check gauge; stitch count is a priority for Smithson.

Many thanks to my Ravelry test knitters!
