Back to Basics

It may surprise you to know that my first ever knitting project was not a garter stitch scarf. No, it was Knitty's Toddle, which is an all-over continuous cable scarf. I really had no idea what I was doing, just that I thought cables looked very nice. I had pink aluminum straight needles and pink acrylic yarn, and I used a paintbrush as a cable needle. It took me a couple weeks to knit, but I was hooked on knitting.

Garter Stitch Scarf

Of course I had to knit a garter stitch scarf someday, and that day came while we were still in Germany, while the snow was still white and fluffy on the ground, while the rest of the world was enjoying pleasant spring weather. I had a little more than 2 balls of yarn left over from my top-down sweater (which I haven't blogged about, argh), and plenty of free time.

Knitting the scarf on its long side was a nice change. I even made fringe. I've never done fringe before! I do like the way it looks, a little more casual, not so dressy. I ran out of yarn halfway through my last knitting row, so I ended up connecting lengths of fringe together to finish that last row and the cast-off row. I haven't trimmed the stray bits, but I've decided to leave it in. Call it laziness, call it rustic, I'm not going to frog mohair!
