Gossamer

Knitting. Ah, knitting. Sometimes I feel guilty about ignoring my knitting or alternately, my climbing. I haven't any new projects to write about, mainly because I'm trying to finish Kiri as quickly as possible. So hence, another picture of it here. Can I just say what a dork I've been for ignoring circular needles for more than a year? Anita and La first got me curious about them; La had these needle-and-cord thingies called Denise needles, and showed me how easy it was to change the needle. But I'm a little slow. It takes at least a year to process that kind of information! (grins)

But anyway, do you notice anything different between this and my first shawl?

No lifelines.

He he.

I thought, when I first started out, might as well tempt Fate for the third time and knit with Kidsilk Haze without lifelines. ...It's good for the head.

Bea Ellis Hats

One of the pleasures of being a novice knitter is discovering designers, designs, and techniques. Everything is so new! I don't know how I arrived at Bea Ellis, probably through reading our Wendy's voluminous archives, but I got there and fell in love with Miss Ellis' original hat designs. And with a spectrum of beautiful colors to knit with! I was quite taken with (from left to right) Let It Snow, Ufserud, and Traditional. So help me decide which one to start off with. Tell me which one you'd knit for yourself (experience level not a condition) and why. Thanks girlies!

I love the middle one. I love them all, but I really like the continuous pattern. The one on the right is my second favorite. I would probably like the one on the left more if it wasn't such a pinky-pink. But yes, I say middle.

i like traditional as a hat to wear. i like the band of color closer to my face and the two-toned look of the hat overall.

for pure knitting, i think i'd go with let it snow. in fact, after reading your post i'm thinking about ordering that one myself to make into a little bag.

Wow! I want to knit those too! I like the one on the right the most.

what beautiful lace. I like the middle hat best - the colourway and the all-overpattern. beautiful, but more understated than the other two.

thanks for the link, mj - i hadn't seen those at all before. very reasonable prices too, sweeet.

umm, my choicw would be the middle one, it's so arts-and-craft looking, like a william morris background. second choice would be traditional.

Ooh, I love the middle one, for sure. It's my hands down favorite.

Another vote for the middle hat. The design looks 'younger' (more modern?) to me.

I like the grey one (on the right) the most. I like how it has sort of a border.

I like the pink and the grey ones. The pink because...well, it's pink :-0 and the grey one because it looks traditional and I like that.

Now I've been introduced to Bea Ellis too!! Thanks MJ! It is the most fun discovereing a new designer, technique, or yarn around every corner as a newish knitter. I like the traditional, I think because it's 2-part. Although I looked up her page, and did you see the Moose!! This is enough to make me try Fair Isle.

i would go with the third one. the snowflake on the first one is too big, it would fold up on your head while you wear the hat and look funny. the second one is too busy with that big pattern all over. the third one is just right with medium sized snowflakes that would show perfectly on your head, and the small pattern keeping the top from being dull, but not looking wonky while worn.

erin said:

The pink one on the left because the pattern is so unique. But it does look like I can pull it down to my chin if I wear it :)

The first one and the third one are the ones I would go with. The middle one has too much stuff going on and I really do like the snowflake pattern on the first one and the traditional pattern calls to me as well. Kiri is looking beautiful too.

Wendy said:

Third one is my fav -- because I love the more traditional designs. :-)

Thanks for the links! I LOVE the hats - they look like something I'd actually wear! :) I love the pink one - something about the placement of the pattern is just right to me! :)

Kiri is looking gorgeous!

I love the middle one. I think it is interesting. However...the one on the left is also quite interesting...The one on the far right is also nice in a traditional way...I'm just going to go away, now. I'm not really helping. :)

I like the one on the right the best. The only problem I see with it(and the one on the left) is that it looks like they will end up being cuffed, and that the design will be folded in an awdward place that won't end up showing the pretty detail.

Leisel said:

That would be "awkward" not "awdward".

The shawl is beautiful. Life on the wild side isn't too bad, eh?
I'd go for the pink one but I'm really into pink these days.

I made the middle hat with very little previous experience in two color knitting and it came our great. It was a little small though.

Mia said:

I like the traditional one on the right. But I would probably select different colors.

I like the one on the right (Traditional) as well (although they're all really nice). It would look cute in blue and white!

Such cute hats and I can't wait to see your kiri all blocked - she looks so ethereal!
Pics from your climbing trip are great - I've done one grade 13 climb at Arapiles here in Vic. I needed to be wearing brown pants almost. LOL

Even though you've already "chosen" all three, I'm going to play and go with Ufserud. Have fun - they should be great climbing hats - do you ice climb? You strike me as a girl who would!
