Mom's Projects

Thanks for all the comments on the Flower Basket Shawl everyone. It was such a great project, and lace... I love lace! I'm planning on buying some circulars, though; lace knitting on 14" straights aren't very comfortable.

It isn't a surprise to my family that I took up knitting and loved it. I know my love for knitting and yarn comes directly from my mom. She is, however, a crocheter, but all the same I'd like to share some of my mom's work. She is, like me, self-taught, and a visual crocheter. She has never gone by patterns. All the following were made using TLC yarns, which are mostly acrylic. Imagine if she had some beautiful natural yarns! The first is a triangular shawl in progress, using a pineapple motif:

Red vest, using a scallop motif:

Dusty rose pink vest (her favorite, I think) in a flower motif. Each of those hexagons were joined to each other, ends woven in as she crocheted:

Once I tried teaching her how to knit (once and tried being the operative words) and we just ended up giggling at her efforts. She just couldn't understand this thing with two huge sticks (I gave her US9s) that created something like the Flower Basket Shawl. She put those needles down soon enough! (She did, however, keep the Classic Elite Inca Alpaca.... hm....)

Well it's definately in the genes then! And as for her keeping the Inca Alpaca...that just shows she has very good taste. It's amazing that she did all that with no pattern! P.S. My Liesel is coming along swimmingly, and I posted about it yesterday. This has opened up the whole world of lace for me!

That is really some beautiful work your mom has crocheted and the dusty rose is my favorite. It looks so good against her skin tone, I can see why it would be her favorite too! Thanks for posting pics of your mom's work, truly beautiful.

And your mom's not crazy, she knows the CE Inca Alpaca is some nice stuff! I love it myself.

That is fabulous work. I think, honestly, the best I've seen. We have crocheted samples all over the LYS I work at, but they are the kind that kind of reinforce the idea of crochet being all sc, dc, tc, or round (gigantic) flowers in contrast yarn on white mesh sheath dress.
I like the pink vest, but I think that the pineapple shawl is my favorite.

I actually just picked up the IK Crochet, b/c I figured it was time to expand my skill set.

Your mum's work is truly beautiful. This shawl is gorgeous. Pity she won't take to the needles... I am sure she could make wonders.

Oh wow. That's incredible.

What a talented mom! And your FBS is so pretty. I never thought I could wear a shawl but seeing you wear it with jeans and a shirt, well, maybe I could too. :)

I wish you mom could translate those into patterns, I'd love to carry them at the store. We really could use more creative crochet patterns and these are definitely creative.

Your FBS is wonderful! I made several from that pattern. It's definately a fun knit! I absolutely fell in LOVE with the pinapple triange pattern though! Is this a free pattern or where can I wander to and find that! It's georgous!

Your mom's work is amazing - and your blog is great!! I knit and also crochet and when it comes to crochet always preferred diagrams to written pattern instructions - does your mom have the shawl pattern drawn out/or written out? Would she consider selling the instructions? I would LOVE to make one of these :-0

How fun to be able to share (well, almost) a craft with your mom! My mom cross stitches, which I used to do until I discovered knitting. My grandma crochets and she's always really excited when I knit something new.

oooooo - you've made me want to learn to crochet!
