Pass this on.

So Stinkerbell got an email from Kim Hargreaves saying that the patterns will not be for sale. You have. To buy. The kit. Um, $54 for a shrug? Plus $17 for shipping? Still undecided with this; what do you think?

I finally purchased my copy of Stephanie's At Knit's End and Interweave Knits' Summer 2005 issue. I flipped through and snickered at a couple of paragraphs; I definitely like it. I'll put this in the knitting bag as an on-the-go read. As for the magazine, I definitely like Debbie Bliss' Fiery Bolero; it's the adult interpretation of Poppy from Cotton Angora. Vicki Sever's Heart Sachet and Ann Budd's Baby Socks are good-to-have patterns when you have just one skein of sock yarn. My favorite, though, is Fiona Ellis' Premiere Pullover: cables and lace in a classic silhouette, just my style.

I finished knitting the smocking on the back and tonight I'll try to finish it off; try being the operative word as we have dinner guests and I don't function much after a couple of glass of wine. Wendy told me that the yarn, Baruffa Aerobic, has been discontinued for quite some time but that it wore surprisingly well. Good to know for a toddler's jacket!

So, I guess we'll be seeing a lot of Rowan yarns on ebay huh. You know, I'm all for copyright, but stuff like this makes me want to infringe and infringe. (Shh. I didn't really say that!) Totally unacceptable.

I'm seeing Stephanie read tomorrow night - and I'm still undecided about the new IK.

Have a great day!

Ah well, looks like I'll be passing up on Ms. Hargreave's new stuff then.

I finished Stephanie's book this morning. I'm tempted to make my next post just a page number to refer to in that book. So many instances where that would suffice. :P

At $71 before you even have a knit shortsleeve cotton garment, you have to wonder where is the line between hobby and addiction! We are not all made of money!! Kim is really going for a particular target market, which is her perogative. That said, I'm still not willing to shell out those big bucks to make a garment out of yarn that is currently in my stash!

I'm still stewing on your Koigu question. School has been busy - I will email later this week.

not
worth
it

in my humble opinion :)

Not even worth it. I wasn't truly moved by any of the designs...it sucks that it's being put out that way.

Totally not worth it (to me, anyway). Even if I loved something enough to pay that price, I wouldn't want to reward someone for what I think is a pretty irritating sales strategy.

Well, in that case, she can pretty much count me out as a customer. It's just way too expensive. I can see myself buying a pattern (although, like Christie, I didn't find anything on there that even made me really want to make it), but I'm not likely to buy a kit, which means you can never just buy the yarn from a place with better prices or wait until it goes on sale.

Kim can keep her stuff at those prices. I bet she changes her mind sooner or later. I will trying to brave the hordes when Stephanie comes to Maryland Sheep and Wool.

Boo... I concur its not worth it. Still interested in learning to spin on a wheel? Let me know - maybe we can meet up at a coffee shop or something :)

It makes me sad that Kim isnt going to sell just the patterns. Doesnt she understand that there is a large American market of knitters that would love to buy her patterns, but dont want to pay the huge conversion rate plus a shipping fee for yarn and pattern. I really think she is limiting the amount of people that she could be reaching with her lovely patterns. I know there was three or four of them that I really wanted to knit, but i dont want to shell out the money. I wonder if a bunch of us knitters banded together and all emailed her and told her that we would really like to buy just her patterns if she would possibly change her mind. Who knows...its just a thought. Have a great day!

I wonder how many people are really buying the kits... I have not seen many people that think it is a great idea...

I think there is a lot of power in this knitblog community, and she would be wise to listen to it! :P

Yuck. How dissapointing! I hate kits. Its the whole idea of kits that makes me sick! Why do we knit?! For handcrafted things... a kit is just a symbol of putting some cookie cutter thing together... I know, I know, not that easy... but I refuse to buy them now, especially for 17 bucks shipping?! THere are too many other patterns out there that I want to make now. Owell!

$71 to knit a shrug? in cashmere, maybe. in cotton, not on my needles!

I wouldn't pay the price for the kit and shipping for Kim Hargreaves. You can find other shrug patterns and use either yarn from your stash or buy some that will be cheaper than her prices. I really don't like things kitted up. I prefer to be able to pick and choose things of my own liking. That's one of the reasons I like knitting so much. I can take the basic design (pattern) and choose my own yarn and colors that differ from the pattern and make it my own unique garment. A kit takes away from that. And I personally have "issues" with Summer Tweed that I would never knit with it again, so I definitely wouldn't want a kit of it. The colors in Summer Tweed are gorgeous but I hate knitting with the yarn!
